In the late 1980s, he met Leonard Cohen backstage after Cohen performed in Paris, and praised „Hallelujah,” asking Cohen how long it had taken to write. It had taken Cohen years, but not wishing to come off as the tortured and exacting artist, he lied and told Dylan it taken a year or two. Then it was Cohen’s turn to praise one of his favorite Dylan song, „I and I,” and ask how long it had taken to write. Dylan replied it had taken fifteen minutes.
